Tirupati: Gender discrimination not an obstacle for women: VC

Tirupati: In a bid to exhibit the innate power and capabilities of women to the society, a 'Power walk' was organised by Sri Padmavati Mahila Vishwavidyalayam on Sunday. Large number of students and faculty of SPMVV and Sri Padmavati College of Women actively took part in the walk.

The Women studies department of SPMVV, students affairs wing, department of physical education and integrated human-rights and anti-corruption organisation (IHRAACO) have jointly organised the event. Speaking on the occasion, SPMVV Vice Chancellor Prof D Jamuna called upon the women to realise their true potential and come forward to make their mark in their chosen fields.

Both men and women should strive for removing sexual discrimination and male domination should never come in the way of women development. She underlined the motive of Mahila University which is women empowerment and it will be showcased through this power walk. The rally began at administrative building of SPMVV and went up to Jyothi Rao Pule statue at Balaji Colony.

Programme organiser and in-charge head of Women studies department Dr P Neeraja observed that women and children were unable to exercise their fundamental rights provided by the constitution to them. The main objective of power walk was to send a clear message to society that women should come on to the streets freely without fear and it is the duty of everyone to ensure this, she said.

Students affairs Dean Prof G Savitri stressed that women security was national security and no one has any right to deny the rights of women provided by the constitution. IHRAACO South India President Chakrapani assured that their organisation would always be ready to work for sexual equality.

Physical education director Dr Sara Sarojini, School of sciences dean Prof A Jyothi, NSS coordinator Prof J Katyayani, Dr Sobha Rani, staff of IHRAACO, PASS, RASS, SI Swathi, Dr Madhavi and others participated.
