Visakhapatnam: Life Share Blood Bank, a unit of Vemulapalli Kodanda Ramayya (VRK) Trust, organised a seminar on 'Challenges in the field of Transfusion Medicine' to create awareness among physicians and nurses in the city over the precautions to be taken before transfusing blood to patients, once they are delivered from blood banks.

The Blood Bank will be giving blood free of cost to patients suffering from thalassemia, sickle cell and hemophilia in August and September.

Patients who need blood should register with blood bank prior to the delivery. Other patients will be given each unit of blood at Rs 600 for the same period.

Speaking at the seminar, in-charge of transfusion cell of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hopsital, Mumbai, Rajesh Sawant said that many a times people were unaware that under what conditions blood should be stored and given to patients.

"Different blood components are to be stored in different temperatures, like RBC has to be stored in 1.0 to 6.0 degree Celsius and platelets in 24 degree Celsius.

It is utmost important that we focus on post blood usage among all the medical staff.

The over transfusion of any of the blood components may lead to serious repercussions, including death of the patient," said Rajesh Sawant.
