Vijayawada: The students of PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology, Vijayawada, bagged the trophy and the 2nd runner-up prize of Rs 50,000 at the Smart India Hackathon 2019 Hardware Grand Finale held from July 8 to 12, organised by Institute Innovation Council, MHRD, New Delhi at National Institute of Technology, Tirichurapalli.

Dr Jagadish Vengala, mentor and head, EDC and convener, IIC, PVPSIT, Vijayawada on Tuesday said that about 32 teams with 90 plus ideas from the institute competed in both Software and Hardware editions of which the "CIVIMECHOS" team comprising students V Hema Varshini, Ch Suchita from Civil Engineering Department and M S N S Harsha, K Madhavarao, M Vikasdas, K Sai Sankaran from Mechanical Engineering department have come up with 'Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with Helical Twists' which when placed on the dividers of highways takes the wind power from fast moving vehicles and generates remarkable amount of electricity which can be utilised for highway electrical lighting system.

Dr A Haritha, faculty member, IIC, PVPSIT, Vijayawada said that Smart India Hackathon 2019 is a nationwide initiative which involved 1 lakh plus technical students, 3,000 plus technical institutions, 200 plus organisations from across India. As many as 1,101 ideas were shortlisted for round 1 and out of which 172 ideas made up to the Grand Finale.

CIVIMECHOS was the one to enter the grand finale and won the prize. Dr K Sivaji Babu, principal, PVPSIT, B Sreeramulu, convener and P Lakshmanrao, secretary, Siddhartha Academy appreciated the efforts of the students and congratulated them.
