He said the volunteers visit the houses of the absentees hereafter when students fail to attend the school for more than 2 days
Nellore: Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said they are giving an option to the Amma Vodi beneficiaries from the next academic year for preferring a laptop instead of the financial assistance of Rs. 15,000. He formally launched the second year Amma Vodi programme at Nellore on Monday and said that students who are studying 9-12 standards are eligible for the choice.
He recalled the days of his Padayatra and said he had observed the pathetic conditions of the poor and labourers who failed to educate their children and decided to back them. Last year they had provided the support for 42 lakh beneficiaries and this year it has been increased to 44.48 lakh, he said.
The Chief Minister claimed that the number of students who migrate from private schools to the Government schools has been increased significantly because of the programme. He said they had focussed on mid-day meals and improved the quality of food for the health of the students.
Jagan Mohan Reddy said they have also introduced the English medium session in government schools for the convenience of the poor who cannot afford education in corporate institutions. He said they have started improving conditions in the schools spending huge money on infrastructure.
He said hereafter volunteers visit the houses of the students who fail to attend the classes for 2-3 days. This would increase responsibility among parents and also follow up on the attendance of the students.
Jagan Mohan Reddy said they are deducting Rs. 1,000 from the support amount since the students should question maintenance of the toilets in the school as they are contributing the amount. He said any student can call 1902 on poor maintenance of the toilets and the CMO monitors such instances.
He said that there is 12-22 percent of girls who have been dropouts in the state as per data of the UNICEF and this was due to lacking toilets. So, he said, they are focussing on toilets and other infrastructure. Minister for water resources Dr P Anil Kumar, Industries Minister Gautam Reddy, Education Minister A Suresh, local MP A Prabhakar Reddy, RS Member Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, Collector KVN Chakradhar Babu, legislators K Govardhan Reddy, K Sridhar Reddy, R Pratapkumar Reddy, M Chandrasekhar Reddy, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Dr V Varaprasad, N Prasannakumar Reddy and others were present.
