Kakinada: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) transport wing convener K Sathibabu and Auto Unions Federation president N Surya Prakasa Rao alleged that the Union government was destroying the public road transport system and handing it over to the corporate companies.
Opposing the Motors Vehicles Act in its present form, the CITU leaders and activists staged a dharna here on Monday. It will ruin the livelihood of 10 crores of people who depend upon the transport sector. They may have to face starvation deaths, he added.
They termed it detrimental to the public interest. They said that the Act will destroy the state-owned public transport systems completely. It will expedite the process of complete privatisation of public transport system and takeover of them by big private corporates leading to monopolization and enhancement of the public transport fares harming interests of the common working people and the Bill will also lead to mass-scale victimization of the road transport workers engaged in both public transport and goods transport including the small transport operators.
