What can we learn from Chernobyl?
The HBO Mini-Series is just haunting and Chernobyl nuclear explosion even though is just an incident today, we cannot really undermine the biggest threat it would always be to man-kind and a best lesson in how sickness of man- Money can damage him the most. From different view-points let's see how the series has brought the issue forward and why it worked so well.
What we can take from the series?
Scientific Viewpoint:
Even though I am not an expert in determining the science behind it, I got acquainted with the basic knowledge and show does a great job in explaining things to laymen like me about the complete chaos. We can learn from this incident,
* Science can be used to try and explore many things but we have to first see that scientists and people who are working at high-risk environment understand how crucial their job is and how devastating the results can be if they fail.
* Scientists should try to evolve better methods to use the nuclear waste and if possible produce energy from it.
* Alternative source of energy should be made accessible and available in lower costs. Scientists should be given opportunities to develop more and more such useful systems practically than theoretically.
* Science might be exciting but it would always come with exceptions and we need to be prepared to innovate and execute quick than just wait for catastrophe to wake us up from slumber.
* Educating more and more people in science should be seen as eminent and useful for knowledge transfer than just a degree that will help in survival.
From Filmmaking point of view:
This series is an achievement in terms of going close to reality!
* Be passionate and trust your research more.
* Give ample respect to characters and incidents than trying to point out villains.
* Try to build up everything as well as you can and as realistically as you than sacrifice everything for drama.
* Never take people for granted and never hope that something will work just like that as you mentioned an incident.
Now, let's look at why it worked?
* Writer and Director tried to tell a story that represents historic mistake of humans while pointing fingers on basic human nature - Covering up the truth! The inability to face truth that the series makers questioned, hits us all and we feel guilty and helpless at the same time.
* Without being too patriotic or chest-thumping about a Democratic Nation's greatness, the show did talk about failing systems and bureaucracy. It did show mirror to dictators and even to democratic nations about flaws. This is the biggest and persisting problem that everyone knows exists, hence they could connect easily.
*Casting. The casting was brilliant.
* Craig Mazin's to the point script and research. Johan Renck's penchant to keep things simple understanding the gravity of drama in entirety.
* Lastly, the series makers have to thank Soviet Union's secrecy as no one knows complete truth till date and that helped them immensely to catch more people's eyes.
