Transgenders want their slice of pie in Warangal
Warangal: The Members of Telangana Hijra Transgender Samiti, who met Warangal Urban District Collector Prashant Jeevan Patil on Monday, urged him to ensure equal opportunities to live in the society. They sought the Collector's intervention in getting fair treatment in the society.
on Monday, they presented a memorandum to the collector to see that the transgender community receives the State government incentives for their better living. Referring to the Supreme Court's directions to recognise the transgenders as the third gender, they said that they are entitled to equal opportunities along with men and women.
Despite the Supreme Court's ruling, the State government is yet to roll out a welfare scheme for the community even after five years. States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Odisha are implementing welfare schemes for transgenders, they said.
Further the transgenders demanded the government to bring them under the ambit of Aasara pensions, housing, education, self-employment loans and health card etc.
The members of the community expressed their willingness to become entrepreneurs if the government provides opportunity to them. The transgender demanded the government awareness programmes to be conducted to get rid of people' of misapprehensions about their community.
