Hyderabad: World Wildlife Day celebrated at Nehru Zoological Park

Bahadurpura: The World Wildlife Day was celebrated at the Nehru Zoological Park on Tuesday to promote the importance of sustaining of all life on the earth.

According to officials, on December 20, 2013, at its 38th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed March 3, the day of signature of the Convention as International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as the UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of wild animals and plants.

The theme for this year, 'Sustaining of all Life on Earth,' was explained to the visitors, especially schoolchildren, through talk shows and quiz programme were also conducted on the theme. The visitors were made aware of various animal species including Asiatic Lions, Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopards, Bears, Lion Tailed Macaques and birds, as well as livelihoods of people those living closest to the nature.

Zoo Education Officer G Swetha said that World Wildlife Day is celebrated every year ensuring sustainable use of resources and conservation of land and ground water to stop Bio-diversity loss. She also said that 2020 is also being observed as 'Biodiversity Super year' which will witness several major global events aimed at conserving the biodiversity of the planet.

Zoo Director N Kshitija, Deputy Director (Vet) Dr M A Hakeem, Assistant Curators G Gnyaneshwar, M Bhavani Shankar, Satish Babu, H M Hanifulla and others were presented.
