Hyderabad rape accused encounter was perfect: Advocate Priyanka Tibrewal

The Hyderabad Police claimed that the accused in rape and murder case of the veterinary doctor were trying to run away after attacking them and that the police responded in "self-defence". Many have hailed the cops as heroes while others have questioned their action, terming the killings extra-judicial.

Speaking on the Hyderabad rape-murder case and the police action against the accused, advocate Priyanka Tibrewal stated publicly the country has had enough, recalling the example of 2012 Nirbhaya Case. She said: "The shooting was perfect and I applaud it. What do you do when our judicial system has failed? What is the answer? Should we wait for another seven years like the parents of Nirbhaya?"

Agreeing with her, writer and activist Nilanjana J Chakraborty said she is "extremely happy" about the supposed encounter that people have been touting as a fabricated turn of events. "I am absolutely sure that I am extremely happy about what has happened. I have followed the Nirbhaya case for years. It's a systematic failure. I have no faith in the law. When was the Constitution written? Don't we need to update it? There are laws, but do they have teeth?" she went on to add.

In complete contrast, activist Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury said "There is no salvation for the rape victim and her family. I am shocked with what happened in Hyderabad (killing of four accused by police). There can't be justice without a trial. We can't create moments of violence to answer violence. Yes, we were extremely saddened by what happened to the woman doctor. But we also don't want police to take law in their hands. We don't trust the police," she said.

Theatre activist Usha Ganguli said she was relieved about the encounter first. "I have a strong mind too and that strong mind says this (encounter) is not the way. Things shouldn't be treated like this. Who are these people? Whenever a woman goes and complaints about harassment, these (cops) are the people who don't register cases...make fun of the victims. How can I trust these people? I don't want jungle raj (state of lawlessness) in my country. I believe in the Constitution," the activist went on to add.

A plea has been filed against the policemen who were involved in the alleged encounter in the Supreme Court.
