Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will inaugurate one of the biggest reservoirs Kondapochamma Sagar Reservoir under the lift irrigation scheme on May 29.

Touted as another milestone in completion of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme is constructed at Markook mandal of Siddipet district, the 15 tmc ft capacity reservoir will meet drinking water needs of Hyderabad and provide irrigation facility to 1 lakh acres in the old Medak district.

Since the state was under lockdown, the Chief Minister decided to conduct the event as low-key affair. KCR will inaugurate the reservoir by switching the lift pumps at Aakaram Pump House near Gajwel. The reservoir will have two pump houses each with six pumps lifting 0.65 tmc ft of water every day. Under Kaleshwaram, water will be brought to Kondapochamma reservoir through Mid-Manair, Anantagiri, Ranganaiaksagar and Mallannasagar. The Ranganaiksagar reservoir was inaugurated recently by state IT and Industry Minister KT Rama Rao.

Ahead of the inaugural function, State Finance Minister T Harish Rao and Agriculture Minister Niranjan Reddy on Tuesday visited the reservoir site and reviewed the arrangements being made for the release of the water.

Officials said that plans were already prepared to take up the Phase II of Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project (GDWSP) with Kondapochamma Sagar Reservoir as a source. With 10 tmc ft capacity, Keshavapur reservoir was already taken up at Shampeerpet for Hyderabad drinking water needs exclusively. Water from Kondapochamma Sagar will be lifted to Keshavapur once the reservoir works are completed. It is expected that the Keshavapur works will be completed in two or three months. Under Kaleshwaram, 15 reservoirs were being constructed to utilise Godavari water for irrigation, industrial and drinking water needs. Mallannasagar reservoir is the biggest one with 50 tmc ft capacity in the lift scheme.
