Artist unveils unique statue of Mahatma

Jharasangam: This is an artist's commemoration of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi in a unique way. Hothi Baswaraj, a native of Nyalkal, created a 7-ft statue of Gandhiji. Newspaper cuttings containing article about Gandhiji and stamps with Mahatma were used for the piece of art.

He also used photo features published in various magazines about Mahatma's details. Earlier, his work about 'Save Nallamala' garnered good attention from the public. His sculpture 'Save Nallamala' was a voice against mining in the region.

Explaining about his work, he said saving natural equilibrium is essential for human survival. "I worked five years for the Adivasi Museum in Nallamala forest. I admired the purity of minds of Chenchus, who live in the region.

I carved a head of Chenchu in my sculpture along with thick forest with flora and fauna in my art," he explained. A cutting blade at the neck of the Chenchu is a symbol for destroying the tribal habitat and green forest. The animals have a frightened look.

Activists, locals are appreciating the talent of the artist, who has shown his concern for society in a unique way.
