The Google Pixel 4 And 4 XL Won't Be Coming To India Due To Soli Chip

Google announced the Pixel 4 and 4 XL at its Made by Google event that presented many new features to the next generation of Pixel smartphones. It costs around $799, and delivery across the globe begins on 24 October. Though the Pixel 4 won't be coming to India and the reason is one of its highlighted hardware features the Soli chip.

The Soli chip that is present in the upper matrix of the front sensor does not comply with the guidelines of the National Frequency Allocation Plan standards. It uses a 60 GHz frequency band that is not allowed for public or commercial use. The Soli chip enables Motion Sense on the Pixel 4 that will allow users to make various aerial gestures to control multiple commands on the phone. It is also responsible for facial unlocking.

Simply disabling the chip and releasing the phone in India could not be a solution, as there is no alternative to face unlock the phone. The Pixel 4 does not come with a fingerprint reader, so it depends entirely on facial unlocking for security. By disabling the chip, users will not have the option to block and secure their phones.

It's a bummer that Google didn't consider this possibility before developing the Pixel 4 and 4 XL. Google said in a statement: "Google has a wide range of products that we make available in different regions around the world. We determine availability based on a variety of factors, including local trends and product features. We decided not to make Pixel 4 available in India. We remain committed to our current Pixel phones and look forward to bringing future Pixel devices to India."
