Lionel Messi clinches a record that Cristiano Ronaldo might never achieve
Lionel Messi scripted yet another history during FC Barcelona's 5-0 win over Leganes in the Copa del Rey on Thursday. By doing so, he became the first-ever footballer to clinch 500 goals in Spanish football.
Messi took 710 matches to record the milestone victory and the 32-year-old will hope to add many more to his final today before he finally decides to call it quits at Camp Nou.

The duo of Antoine Greizmann and Clement Lenglet gave Barca comfortable half-time lead before Messi, who missed Barca's Round of 32 win over Ibiza last week, netted their third goal soon after the play resumed after the half-time break. Arthur struck in the 77th minute before Messi registered his brace towards the final minutes of the second half.
It was a major boost for Barca and their new manager, SetiΓ©n - who was under pressure because of the team's uninspiring performances since he took over from Ernesto Valverde earlier this month. Barcelona's recent 2-0 loss to Valencia made things worse for the new manager as it cost the reigning champions the La Liga lead. Barca, who currently are three points behind leaders Real Madrid, can still aim for a third consecutive title if they bounce back in the coming games.
Messi's brace on Thursday took his goals' tally to 20 this season and he will have the chance to increase that further when Barca welcome Levante to Camp Nou on Sunday in their La Liga clash.
