Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA), a non-profit organisation, is conducting a conference on ‘Prevention of Child Marriages’ on February 2 at Round Table Hall, Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Baghlingampally at 10:30 am. APSA has been working from the last three decades towards the development of the marginalized poor of the society. The NGO is working in more than 80 urban slums with men, women and children through various projects in the domains of educational rights, health, child protection and safety, prevention of drugs and alcohol abuse, women’s rights, youth empowerment and gender.

Despite educational reforms, it is sad to note that there are still cases of child marriages in Telangana State. It is not just the parents and the elders who are promoting child marriages, but even some children who in their teens get influenced by various factors and elope to get married, unmindful of their education, career and life a head.

The organisers said, “We need to engage with both the parents and children to create awareness about the ills of child marriage, and at the same time, we need the support of the media to bring such cases of child marriage to the forefront through their news agencies highlighting the offence, the act and the punishment. So that it might not only make the people aware, but also instil a sense of responsibility and fear of law.”
