Alwal:The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to develop a storm water drainage system to tackle the water inundation problem that 50 colonies face in and around Alwal. There are three lakes – Peeda Cheruvu (Old Alwal), Chinnarayuni Cheruvu (Macha Bolaram) and Kotha Cheruvu (Alwal) – in the area which get flooded during the monsoon and the areas are inundated.

The most affected colonies are BHEL Colony, Venkatapuram and Macha Bolaram.  The GHMC Circle 16 is developing a storm water system in such a way that the colonies would not be inundated. B Maheshwar, executive Engineer, GHMC Alwal, Circle 16, ward no 132, said: “We are planning to design a proper drainage system, as earlier the drainage system at Alwal area was very poor and not properly planned.”

The pipelines are being placed accordingly in the BHEL Colony, Venkatapuram, Macha Bolaram and also other colonies in Alwal. The water will directly flow downward into the drain and there won’t be any backlash as was the case in the past. This will also help in solving mosquito menace.
The estimated cost for the project is Rs 6 cr and is expected to be completed before the monsoon. It will prevent the locality and the street from water logging.
