Hyderabad: Commissioner of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Dr B Janardhan Reddy on Friday directed officials to initiate steps, like digging pits and dumping garbage, for preparing organic fertilizers in the railway line corridor of the ORR related area. Addressing a high-level meeting in BPP office, he said garbage generated by various gram panchayats and municipalities in HMDA limits should be used for making organic fertilizers, with the active involvement of NGOs as partners. Reddy called for coordinated efforts by officials of Gram Panchayats and municipalities in using the garbage collected locally for making organic fertilizers to be used in raising saplings.

He directed the officials to impose penalties on people dumping garbage openly and illegally in the ORR railway corridor, as it was being converted into a dumping yard. The HMDA Commissioner wanted active participation in such efforts by officials of the Swatchh Bharat Mission in the Directorate of Municipal Administration so as to make the Swatchh Bharat  Mission a grand success. Reddy laid stress on officials inviting innovative ideas for giving a boost to the ‘Harita Kranthi’ in view of 2019 being declared as Green Year. He said NGOs, industrialists and people should be made active participants in ‘Harita Yudham’. For this purpose, he ordered creation of a special window in the HMDA website for successfully conducting and completing ‘Harita Kranti’ by inviting suggestions. The HMDA would act as coordinator in this effort.

He also directed officials to take steps paving the way for visits by students to parks, herbal park, butterfly park and Bamboostem and nurseries by creating awareness among them regarding environmental pollution and raising of medicinal plants. Reddy stated that ducation department officials of Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts should be consulted before finalising steps for visits by students of government schools. In this NGOs and retired employees should be involved. Among those present were HMDA Urban Forestry director Srinivas and other officials.
