Vendors at the market delighted as most of the civic issues are resolved

Hyderabad: Clock ticks, hours chime and the new finial shines atop the 83-year-old Mozamjahi market.

After long years of negligence, renovation works of the Mozamjahi market started on August 16. The project ‘MJ Market restoration’ started on the behest of Principal Secretary, MAUD, Arvind Kumar.

Mozamjahi market vendors are a delighted lot. They are heaving a sigh of relief as they don’t have to face the perennial water logging problems during rainy season anymore.

Huge chunks of concrete used to fall off the ceiling and poor storm water drainage channels compounded the problems.

Now the ceiling work is underway. The granite structure is supported by an iron frame that holds layers of bricks and tiles.

“The trickiest part is renovating the building roof which is carpeted with the layers of cement adding weight to the ceiling and was worn out over the ages.

It could have fallen anytime so we identified a few spots where roof needed to be dismantled and reconstructed using the same material.

The whole restoration project is directed under technical guidance of a conservation architect,” said Arvind Kumar.

Mubeen, a vegetable vendor at the market said, “Every monsoon the market gets waterlogged, choking the sewerage lines for weeks.

The new storm water drainage system has resolved this issue.” The results have begun to show. In the recent spell of rain that the city witnessed, there was no water logging.

Platform on the outer side of the building is being restored with lime plaster, onion dome and clock has been restored.

“Restoration work is at full pace, we expect it to be completed by October or early November,” added Arvind Kumar.
