OGH doctors, staff wear helmets at work

Hyderabad: Staff working in the State-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) including doctors, junior doctors, nurses wore helmets for protection while discharging their duties on Friday. In the last one month there were incidents of roof crumbling causing injuries to junior doctors, nursing staff. As a result, medical staff has been resorting to different forms of protests.

Out-patient checkups for patients were conducted outside the OP block under the trees a day earlier. In continuation, OGH JAC wore helmets to duty to drive home the message that their safety was at risk. JAC chairman Dr Pandu Naik said they would continue with protests until government and administration take concrete steps.

General secretary of Telangana Nurses Association P Hemalatha said that hospital staff and patients in OGH were staying in a sense of fear as portions of ceiling were peeling off quite regularly. Whenever it’s raining, staff and patients are more worried as anything can happen posing risk to lives, she said. Meanwhile, OGH JAC are mulling to seek an appointment with Governor ESL Narasimhan in the coming week to take the grave concern to his notice. They are hoping that Governor comes to their rescue at the earliest.

The hospital JAC, few months earlier, staged demonstration for 88 days continuously seeking construction of a new building as working in the dilapidated old building was not advisable anymore. Health Minister C Laxma Reddy assured them at that time they will take measures to lay foundation stone for a new building at the earliest, but it never materialised.
