Breda: India went down fighting 1-3 to Australia via the penalty shoot-out in the final of the Champions Trophy hockey tournament, in this Holland city on Sunday.

India had lost to Australia in the shoot-out in the final of the 2016 edition too. The teams were locked 1-1 at full-time.

Blake Govers scored from a penalty-corner in the 24th minute to put Australia ahead. India equalised through Vivek Prasad in the 42nd minute to restore parity for India.

In the tie-breaker, Australia's Aran Zalewski took the first try and scored. Sardar Singh pushed straight into Australia 'keeper Tyler Lovell's pads.

Australia then made it 2-0 through Daniel Beale. India appeared to have pulled a goal back through Harmanpreet SIngh but his goal was disallowed as he took more than eight seconds for his routine.

Goalkeeper Sreejesh then saved Matthew Swann's hit to keep India alive, but India's failed again from the next try as Lalit Uphadaya could not beat the Aussie goalkeeper

However, Sreejesh keep India in the hunt by thwarting Craig Tom (0-2). Manpreet then scored to make it 1-2 for India , but Jeremy Edwards scored off Australia's fifth attempt to clinch the issue 3-1.

The Netherlands clinched the bronze medal, defeating Olympic champions Argentina 2-0 in the third-fourth place play-off match earlier in the day.
