Charminar: The GHMC staff (South Zone) conducted awareness rallies across the Old City area to educate masses about the sources of malaria, dengue, mosquito breeding grounds on World Mosquito Day on Monday.

Hundreds of staff took out rallies in their respective circles led by senior officials to generate awareness about mosquito breeding grounds, particularly in view of rainy season. Speaking on the occasion, Zonal Commissioner, N Ravi Kiran said that denizens must be aware of the water stagnation points and should not allow water to accumulate inside their houses, which could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. He asked the officials to bring down the number of cases in the area by educating the people and effective implementation of Urban Malaria Scheme.

Near Charminar, about 200 GHMC staff from Circle 9 and 10 took out a rally from Sardar Mahal (Zonal office) via Charminar to Madina and returned back holding banners and placards. Local corporators, Syed Sohail Quadri (Pathergatti) and Renu Soni (Ghansi Bazar), Deputy Commissioner, B Suman Rao, supervisors, Shiva Kumar, Naresh, Jagapathi and Arun Kunar, Assistant Entomologist, Satish Reddy and others took part.

Speaking to The Hans India, N Srinivas, senior entomologist said that the day was observed as ‘Wold Mosquito Day’, as Sir Ronald Ross through his research found that the mosquito was behind the malaria disease, as mosquito-borne parasitic infection spreads through Anopheles mosquito. The parasite multiplies in red blood cells and if not treated properly could be fatal. “With this awareness rallies we hope that the people would cooperate in controlling the vector-borne diseases by providing access inside their houses to track any possible water stagnation points.

Starting from this year there were 12 cases reported in the Zone and we hope to bring down with people’s cooperation,” he added. Besides the rally near Charminar, a bike rally from Salarjung museum to Imlibun bus station was taken out. Meanwhile in other areas, several school children also took part rallies in their localities.
