GITAM involves community in disaster management
Hyderabad: The government of Andhra Pradesh is developing world best disaster management strategies using latest technologies with community involvement, informed by AP State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner V.Prasanna Venkatesh here on Monday at GITAM Deemed to be University. He participated as chief guest during a international workshop on “Disaster Mitigation and Management” jointly organised by GITAM Civil Engineering Department and University of Tokyo Disaster Management Training Center.
While addressing the gathering he mentioned that the government is planning to train the young people in the state of Andhra Pradesh to utilise their services in community based disaster management program. He said the government is also encouraging start-ups in disaster management through research support. He informed that the State Disaster Management Authority made tie up with AP Drone Corporation to get the exact and quick damage assessment reports after natural calamities. He expressed that the government is ready to join the hands with international organisation to prepare a better model for disaster management.
GITAM Vice-Chancellor Prof. MS Prasada Rao expressed that disaster management is not a single domain it is a combined effort particularly involving community, government, experts, technology, health care. He said that GITAM University is actively involved in disaster management studies and running a special M.Tech., program on the subject.
The University of Tokyo Disaster Management Training Centre (DMTC) Deputy Chief Dr.Muneyoshi Numada briefed about the disaster management process engineering. He said that his research team analyzed 48 kinds of 500 disaster management processes and developed a disaster response model using super computer.
