Gutkha spoiling health of poor

Update: 2019-02-02 05:30 IST

Bhimavaram: The sale of gutkha and other tobacco products are increasing steadily even though a ban on such products is in force in several mandals of the West Godavari district.

There has been a widespread campaign against use of tobacco products in media, particularly magazines and television. People are warned of cancer and other diseases.

The impact of the government campaign has failed to curtail its use.
In spite of ban on gutkha and khaini, the products are available in pan shops and kirana shops in Bhimavaram, Palakoderu, Veeravasaram and other mandals.

The shop owners have been secretly supplying the products to regular customers, a majority of whom belongs to poor section.

Even though pictures of affected parts because of tobacco consumption on packets are displayed, these products are being sold like hot cakes.

Many innocent people are buying these products and falling sick after their prolonged use.

The vigilance and health department officials should initiate steps to stop the illegal sale and supply of the tobacco products to save precious lives.
