More research on alternative healthcare system stressed

Tirupati: Translational research for human health care needs new grammar of collaboration and effective listening to the needs of poor, stressed the former secretary of Science and Technology, Government of India Dr Tirumalachari Ramasami.

Delivering a keynote address at the two-day UGC sponsored workshop on “Listening to Scientists and Social Scientists on Translational Research” held at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) in Tirupati on Tuesday, he said that, available health care systems might not be accessible to millions and not affordable to billions.

Economics of human health care need redefinition based on affordability. Dr Ramasami has opined that India could offer an alternative healthcare R&D system built on core strengths and could play the game changer by reversing the path. India in need of R&D solutions to serve 1.3 billion people suffering from both infectious diseases and non-communicative diseases. 

He said that in the distant past human health care in India was viewed as a societal service built on the principle of system based approaches and personalised treatment strategies. In the changing scenario private sector has been emerging as a major investor into health care R&D in which India’s pharmaceutical sector became a global player. 

Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in charge Vice Chancellor Prof V Durga Bhavani has stressed the need for research that should help future generations. The Dean of School of Social Sciences Prof K Murugaiah underlined the need for social inclusion and explained the research and development before and after independence.

The Director of Centre for Translational Research Prof P Vijaya Lakshmi asserted that the centre will be developed as one of the biggest research centres in the country. Convener of the workshop Prof P Uma Maheswari Devi, Prof R Usha, other faculty, Research Scholars and students took part.
