Update: 2019-01-20 05:30 IST

Ongole: The Medical Council of India (MCI) gave clearance to  the request of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Ongole and started to allocate post-graduate seats to the college.  The jubilant college management hopes that the government will take up infrastructure development, as the Cabinet passed a resolution to bring all RIMS in the State under its administration.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences was  established in 2007 in Ongole and the first batch in the medical college was started in 2011 with 21 departments and with 100 students. As the college received permanent recognition from the MCI last year, the management applied for a total of 40 PG seats in 10 departments.

Now after careful consideration, the MCI started approving PG seat requests for the physiology and pharmacology departments. The MCI team is expected to inspect the college this month in connection with counselling for the PG seats for 2019-20 academic year. Last month, the government has issued a GO to take up the administration of the semi-autonomous RIMS.

The RIMS staff is expecting that the government will provide the needed infrastructure and complete staff required to meet the demand from the patients. Dr Shaik Mastan Saheb, former director of the college said that the administration is in the transition stage to the government.

He said that due to the government administration, all of the contract doctors will be regularised and single type permanent employment will be available to the staff, instead of the four types of employees earlier. He said that the principal of the college and superintendent of the hospital will take  necessary decisions for the infrastructure development and get the formal approval from the government.
