Women role vital in protection of environment

Tirupati: The role of women in protecting the environment which in turn help societies was stressed by the Director and Head of the Department of Women’s Studies at Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirappalli Prof N Maimekalai. 

She delivered the keynote address at the two-day UGC national seminar on “Strengthening women on environment towards sustainable lifestyles” organised by the Department of Women’s Studies of Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) here on Friday.

She underlined the need for the active participation of women as the current global environmental issues and concerns have an impact on them. There was a need for them to play strong role to influence the changes rather than being passive observers.

Natural disasters take place primarily due to over exploitation of the natural resources among other things, she said. The Registrar of SPMVV Prof DM Mamatha has said that one should realise their responsibilities in making better use of natural resources like water, land and air which has been resulting in pollution.

Dr KR Vasudeva of Department of Postharvest Technology at College of Horticulture, Bengaluru has stated that several changes have been taking place in climatic conditions due to urbanisation and industrialisation.

The Dean of School of Social Sciences Prof K Murugaiah has said that natural resources play a vital role in protecting environment and make people comfortable to live on this earth. Underlining that water is the root cause of the existence of the Universe, he quoted Niti Aayog and said that by 2025 around 48 countries in the world will have problem for drinking water while by 2030 about 40 percent of India’s population will not have enough water. 

Seminar Director Prof R Jayasree has explained the objectives of the seminar and said that about 80 scholars from AP, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Odisha will present papers during the two days. Prof DB Krishna Kumar, Prof G Sandhya Rani, Dr Neeraja, Dr Madhuri, Dr Padmavathi and Prof Bharathi and others took part.
