Krishna heaves a sigh of relief

Vijayawada: The Krishna district administration heaved a sigh of relief when various seacoast mandals came out of the cyclone threat with nominal loss after the cyclone crossed the coast in East Godavari district on Monday. 

Indeed, they feared severe cyclone impact based on previous experiences but now they felt relieved. However, paddy in around 7,000 hectare was submerged in several mandals in East Krishna.  Meanwhile, the officials of water resources department released 7,000 cusecs water from Prakasam barrage to sea.

According to officials, the Krishna district escaped major cyclone havoc. At one stage, the officials suspected that the cyclone would hit coast at Machilipatnam. Now the district administration headed by collector B Lakshmikantham is participating in cyclone relief operations. The district collector announced a holiday for educational institutions one more day on Tuesday. 

Already, the district administration deployed 2,000 personnel for cyclone relief operations. As part of relief operations, special cyclone shelters have been provided at cyclone-prone areas.

The collector inaugurated mobile vegetable vehicles with a view to avoid vegetables shortage in Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Koduru, and Kruttivennu mandals. Similarly, 42 tankers are ready to supply drinking water.

The staff of municipal, malaria and fire services is also extending their services to avoid any kind of inconvenience. The legislators of cyclone prone areas and district administration are jointly conducting relief operations.

The highest rain fall of 113 mm was registered at Mandavalli mandal alone while 3487 mm rain fall was registered in the total 50 mandals in Krishna district on Monday.

Krishna district agriculture department joint director D Tagore Naik said that they had protected paddy in nearly one lakh acre. Speaking to The Hans India, Mohan Rao said that still one lakh acre is in pre-harvesting stage. Total damage or loss is very nominal to farming community of Krishna district, he added.
