AASU leaders seek Naidu’s support to their fight against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Amaravati: All Assam Students’ Union leaders met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and sought his support for their movement against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 placed in Parliament by NDA government, which will hamper the interests of people of North Eastern States.

The AASU leaders’ delegation including Dipanka Kumar Nath, president, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, general secretary, Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya, chief advisor, Prof Basanta Deka and Prof Shikar Sarma, Gauhati University met the Chief Minister at the Secretariat on Monday.

The delegation members said the Central government has placed the Bill in Parliament and a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is entrusted with interacting with various groups and individuals across the country. 

The Bill proposes to regularise all the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh into Assam till 2014 on the basis of religion. The AASU leaders said that the proposed Bill will pave way to regularise all the Hindu Bangladeshis till 2014.

The Bill will make the Assam Accord invalid in the clearest possible terms. This should not be acceptable to any political party of the country which ratified the Assam Accord in Parliament in 1985.

The AASU leaders appealed to the Chief Minister to persuade the Central government to withdraw the proposed communal Bill, to discuss with GOI for deportation of the illegal Bangladesh nationals and sealing of Assam Bangladesh border. 

They appealed to the Chief Minister to initiate measures to provide Constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to people of Assam as per the Assam Accord.

Chandrababu Naidu assuring support to the AASU leaders in their movement said that the Central govt should respect the sentiments of Assam people. He wonder why the NDA govt was acting against the spirit of national integration. Naidu assured to discuss the matter with the stakeholders and extend support to Assam people.
