Elephant electrocuted
Tirupati: A elephant was found dead at a field in Berupalli village of Palamaneru mandal, 120 km from here on Wednesday. According to forest sources, the elephant’s death was caused due to electric shock.
A herd of five elephants which strayed into the village damaged the standing crops. A farmhand guarding the field burst crackers after seeing the elephants in the field damaging crops, to scare the jumbos. The elephants retreated into the forests.
The farmhand found an elephant lying dead the field after day break and informed the forest officials. Forest range officer (FRO) Madhusudhan Reddy who visited the village said that preliminary enquiry indicated that the elephant died due to electric shock.
The pachyderm came into contact with an overhead live wire when it raised its trunk while fleeing back to forest, after the herd was chased by the villagers.
