GMR Infrastructure to set up port at Kona village

Rajamahendravaram: GMR Infrastructure Limited, the country's leading infrastructure group, will set up a port at Kona village, 30 kms away from Kakinada in East Godavari district with an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore.

Kakinada Special Economic Zone has selected GMR Infrastructure Ltd for constructing the commercial port. According to a press note released by 
its corporate communication wing, the greenfield commercial port will be developed through Swiss challenge mode and it will be an all-weather, deep draft and multi-cargo port.

The port is located on Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor and is expected to become the gateway to East Coast India as it is in a strategic place, and the operational capacity of port is 16 million metric tonnes.

A revenue share of 2.7 per cent in gross revenue goes to state government for a period of 30 years. Meanwhile, the government also gave its nod to provide basic facilities such as road connectivity to port from the national highway.

The port helps to strengthen economic base of region. The port will be spread in an area of 1,950 acres while the industrial parks in an area of 8,500 acres which houses a variety of industries such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food and agro processing, discrete manufacturing, electronics and renewable energy.
