Kakinada: Renowned wildlife sanctuary in the district ‘Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary,’ has now its own mascot. This mascot would help to create its own identity in the global arena and represent the elusive species that dwell in these mangrove forests near the Kakinada coast.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests P Mallikarjuna Rao unveiled the ‘Macha-The Fishing Cat’ logo at the sanctuary here on Saturday.

Speaking on this occasion, he said that the government was keen to develop forest-based tourism and also wants the participation of the locals in protecting the elusive and very rare species in the district. He informed that Coringa was the first sanctuary in the state that has a mascot. “The fishing cats dwell in these mangrove forests are very rare and need to be protected,” he added.

DFO, Wild Life Ananth Sankar told that this launch is a boon to carry out the ecotourism in this district. He further cited that only after the launch of “Bhoor Singh or The Barasingha (A Swamp Deer)” mascot the Kanha national park gained momentum in attracting the tourists from India and from across the globe and expressed his wishes that the Coringa Sanctuary would also go in the same lines. DFO Nandini Salaria, school children and others participated in the mascot launch.
