The Chemistry Department of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala organised a seminar on protection of ozone layer for the safety of mankind at its campus in the city on Tuesday. Speaking on ‘Depletion of Ozone - The Indian Context’, AVVS Swamy, assistant professor of Department of Environmental Sciences, Acharya Nagarjuna University, said a massive hole in ozone layer was detected over Tibet in 2006.
Due to change in air circulation, the protective ozone layer is fast depleting. There is an urgent need to protect the environment by curbing global warming. About 75 per cent of Himalayan glaciers will melt down wreaking a havoc if the depletion of ozone layer is not checked, he said.
Poster presentation and painting competitions were organised on ozone layer, global warming, environment conservation and other topics on the occasion. About 30 students of the college took part in the contests. Prizes were given away to the winners. College principal T Vijaya Lakshmi and other faculty members were present.
