UNIDO identifies Mysore as part of the 'Sustainable Cities' Integrated Approach
MYSURU: As part of a project titled 'Sustainable Cities' Integrated Approach', Mysore has been identified as one of the pilot cities by The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
The four other cities which have been selected in the country are Vijayawada, Guntur, Bhopal and Jaipur.
In Mysuru, some of the best practices of solid waste management have helped the city to push it's position in the 'Swachh' race.
Mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is among the objectives of the project. GHG emissions are a result of mismanagement of solid wastes.
MCC Commissioner Shilpa Nag, had said, "The team (from UNIDO) was in Mysuru to discuss and finalise the proposals that we had discussed for inclusion in the project. Once the proposals get final clearances after the technical committee meeting in New Delhi, they would be accordingly getting funding for their implementation."
She added by saying, "A 200-tonne waste to energy plant has been proposed."
Mysore generates around 400-450 tonnes of solid waste daily and half of it is recycled into compost. Plastic waste accounts for 18 per cent of the total solid waste.
If the city faces any shortage with the funding of any project linked to sustainable goals that are justifiable, the gaps in funding would be suitably addressed by The U.N. as "viability gap funding" under Global Environment Facility (GEF).
