MANALI: Surgeons in Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College & Hospital were flabberghasted when X -rays showed 8 Spoons, Knife, 2 toothbrushes, screwdrivers and a steel bar in a 35-year-old man's stomach.

They rushed him to the surgery in a desperate attempt to remove all the items trapped inside his body one by one.

The family members of the patient said he is suffering from some sort of personality disorder and is on medication that left him to eat objects.

Abdominal X-Ray

A few days back when the patient complained about a stomachache, he was brought to a private clinic in Sundernagar where doctor noticed his bulged stomach where the skin had started to develop a sore.

During the treatment, the tip of the knife came out of the stomach and the doctor referred the patient to SLBSGMCH.

After 4 hours of the surgery, the doctors at SLBSGMCH were able to remove the items from his stomach.

He is still in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Doctors said he would recover soon.

The ingestion of foreign objects is a little -discussed type of disorder, according to an article in Psychiatry Online.

Sometimes referred to as Pica, individuals may crave and ingest non-food substances or an unusual quantity or selection of food commodities.

The phenomenon, considered a form of self-harm, is difficult for physicians to diagnose as -unlike with self-harming patients who burn or mutilate themselves- the damage is not always obvious.

It is also nearly impossible to prevent access to all potentially ingestible objects making the behavior difficult to stop without psychiatric treatment.
