Punjab Strike Called By Christian Community Over Manipur Violence Raises Disruption Concerns

Update: 2023-08-09 12:33 IST
A Punjab-wide strike scheduled for Wednesday, initiated by the Christian community to express discontent over the Centre's perceived failure in managing the violence in Manipur, is poised to disrupt normal activities.

The potential impact of the strike is amplified by the backing of the influential Ravidassia and Valmiki communities in the Doaba region. They have declared their intention to stage protests at key intersections in cities and satellite towns, possibly leading to the blockage of certain highways. Numerous market associations in Jalandhar have already disclosed their plans to shutter their shops in support of the strike. As the local administration has not declared a holiday for educational institutions, many school authorities are grappling with the decision of whether to open their schools on the day.

The Diocese of Jullundur has also reiterated its endorsement of the strike. Apostolic Administrator Bishop Agnelo Gracias conveyed, "Considering that the situation in Manipur has yet to demonstrate substantial improvement, the Diocese is certainly in favor of the strike." He subtly urged schools to remain closed for the safety of the students. In the meantime, all missionary schools in the state have already declared a holiday for the day.
