MCD has proposed a new, unified meat policy

New Delhi : A new unified meat shop and licensing policy was introduced by the veterinary department of the Delhi Municipal Corporation's Under this policy, there is a prohibition on the sale of meat near religious sites, as well as addressing differences in licensing prices and procedures across the North, South, and East corporations. The new policy will almost certainly be considered during Friday's House of Councilors meeting.

According to the senior MCD officials, the proposed policy will not be applicable to those shops that are running as per the rules. In this new policy, it is proposed to set a standard minimum distance of 150 meters between religious places and meat shops, which is based on the standard regulation of South MCD. In the case of North and East MCDs, the distance may vary by 50–100 meters depending on the direction of the meat shops.' The category of religious places includes temples, gurudwaras, crematoriums, and cemeteries. The proposal also states that a distance of 150 meters should be maintained between mosques and pork chops, while other meat shops can be allowed without the minimum prescribed distance with the consent of the mosque management committee.

The other official stated that the fees for acquiring a meat shop license in the East and North MCD districts are likely to be raised to match the fees in the South Delhi suburbs. Before opening any meat store or meat processing business, it is required under Section 415 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act to apply for a license from the local authority. The organization issues licenses to businesses that sell sheep, buffalo, goat, chicken, and hog meat in addition to fish. 'The new policy is being implemented to reconcile the conflicts that occurred during the trifurcation period,' added the official.
