Doval Cracks The Whip, Death Toll Touches 27: 10 Points On Delhi Violence

Update: 2020-02-27 09:39 IST

New Delhi: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit hit the ground running on Wednesday, after the Union government gave him the mandate to control violence in North East Delhi which claimed the lives of 27 people and left more than 220 others injured. Doval toured riot-hit areas including some of the most affected parts in Chand Bagh, Seelampur and Maujpur.

Here is a sequence of events after violence which began with stone-pelting incidents on Sunday afternoon, continued for three days:

• The Union government gave the mandate to control the violence in North East Delhi to NSA, Ajit Doval. Earlier, the NSA briefed the Union cabinet on the developments in the riot-affected areas of Delhi.

• Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Centre to call in the army to control violence in the riot-affected areas. The Union government however, said that the army was not being called in.

Avoidable, Abominable Blame Game

• Political parties indulged in avoidable and completely unnecessary blame game. The Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, at a media conference, called for Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation. Sonia wondered where Amit Shah was for three days. She also slammed Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal for his inability to restore normalcy and not out reaching out to the people.

• The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held a press conference at which Rajya Sabha member, Sanjay Singh criticised Union Home Minister, Amit Shah for not giving North East Delhi over to the army. Singh slammed local BJP leaders Kapil Mishra and Abhay Verma for inciting people to violence.

• The BJP, led by Union Minister, Prakash Javadekar and RS Prasad hit back at the Congress and recalled the Sikh genocide of 1984.

High Court Hearing

A Delhi High Court bench consisting of Justices S. Muralidhar and Talwant Singh on Wednesday began hearing petitions seeking lodging of FIRs and arrests of those involved in the violence which erupted in parts of North East Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Court expressed its anguish over the failure of the Delhi Police to register FIRs against the BJP leaders, Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma, over their alleged hate speeches in connection with the CAA-related violence.

The High Court asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to take a "conscious decision" on the matter by 2.30 pm on February 27.

The High Court bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Harishankar will on Thursday resume hearing on the petition.

The Court appointed senior advocate, Zubeda Begum as Amicus Curae in the case and asked her to file a compliance report on the Court's orders.
