BJP MP Nishikant Dubey Challenges Opposition's Push For Statements On Lok Sabha Security Breach

Update: 2023-12-15 18:01 IST

Amidst the massive uproar in both houses of Parliament over the security breach in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, resulting in the suspension of over a dozen MPs, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey questioned the opposition's insistence on obtaining a statement from PM Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah. Dubey argued that the Lok Sabha's security is the responsibility of the Lok Sabha secretariat, not the government, and questioned why the home minister should be held accountable in this regard.

Referring to historical incidents of Parliament security breaches in 1974 and 1994, Dubey highlighted that the responsibility for Lok Sabha security lies solely with the Lok Sabha secretariat. In 1974, when an individual entered the Lok Sabha with two pistols, the Jan Sangh opposition did not make it an issue, and the names of the PM and home minister were not mentioned, emphasizing the distinct responsibility of the Lok Sabha secretariat.

Dubey's tweet drawing parallels between the recent security breach and past incidents prompted strong reactions from opposition leaders. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram criticized the invocation of precedents and emphasized the seriousness of the December 13 incident, urging accountability to be fixed by the government.

In response to Dubey's remarks, Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed skepticism about the statements, questioning the credibility and potential bias of the information. She highlighted the importance of addressing the security concerns raised by the incident.

The December 13 security breach involved two individuals jumping into the Lok Sabha, spraying yellow gas, shouting slogans, and subsequently being overpowered by MPs and security personnel. Two others were protesting outside Parliament. All four were arrested and charged under UAPA. The investigation also led to the arrest of Lalit Mohan Jha, believed to be the mastermind of the plan, who had escaped arrest on Wednesday.
