Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport to be adorned with 7,000 trees

BENGALURU: BIAL released an official statement that said 7,095 trees and shrubs will be safely translocated to other locations within the airport premises in a phased manner, to help enhance the landscape of the airport right from the trumpet interchange to the airport terminal. "To make this a reality, BIAL has put in place several measures, including translocation of more than 7,000 trees and shrubs that are in the path of expansion," an official statement read.

An official said, "A total of 1,285 trees and plants will be translocated in the first phase, while the rest will be carried out over the next two years. Translocating trees makes them fragile and they require long-term nurturing to survive. We have engaged Institute of Wood Science and Technology and Volvo to provide scientific solutions to ensure 98% success. The Volvo tree-transplanter is capable of translocating around 17 large trees each day."

Tom Shimmin, chief projects officer, BIAL said, "Some of the existing tress are unique and aren't available in India. Our aim is to ensure we don't lose these rare species. Further, the land surrounding the new runway will be carpeted with lush greenery, making KIA the first in the country and only the third in the world to have green corridors around the runway,"
