At least 10 people were killed and more than a dozen injured after a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, one of Australia’s most popular tourist spots. The incident occurred around 6.30 pm local time when two gunmen reportedly opened fire on a large crowd gathered to mark the first day of Hanukkah during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event.
According to Australian media reports citing police sources, one of the attackers was shot dead, while the second suspect was critically injured. New South Wales Police believe between 50 and 100 shots were fired, triggering panic as people fled the beach area to escape the gunfire. Videos circulating on social media showed two men dressed in black firing from a footbridge overlooking the beach, though authorities said the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified.
Police later carried out raids in nearby areas and arrested a 60-year-old man from a unit above a commercial premises around two hours after the attack. He was taken to hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries during the arrest. Separately, another man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound and remains in serious condition.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” saying his thoughts were with the victims and their families. He confirmed that federal and state authorities were working closely with New South Wales Police as investigations continue and more details emerge about the motive behind the attack.
