Rare stucco of human figure draws attention

Gunfoundry: Minister for Prohibition and Excise, Sports and Youth Services and Tourism and Culture and Archaeology Srinivas Goud visited Centenary Museum, located in Dapartment of Heritage, on Monday to inspect the stucco figure brought from the excavated site of Phanigiri.

"This unearthed stucco figure is a master piece and is worth preserving and displaying it in the museum for the people to visit and to get aware of depicts of Buddhism that flourished in Telangana," said Srinivas Goud.

Srinivas Goud instructed the Department of Heritage to take necessary actions immediately and to take up conservation works of this rare stucco. A unique life-size stucco figure measuring 1.73 meter in length and 35 cm width was found in upside down position in north-eastern side of the site.

It is rare to find stucco of human figure at excavation sites, not only in Telangana, but also in the country. The stucco figure is presumed to be that of Bodhisattva or Yaksha (devotee of Lord Buddha).
