Plea to stop animal cruelty & abuse

Hyderabad: There is a rise in animal cruelty, abuse cases and illegal slaughter cases in the state of Telangana. All the animals which were brought into the city are in violation of Section 540 of GHMC Act., not only with regard to cattle, there are several other animals and birds are subjected to cruelty and getting abused. Nowadays, cruelty on pet animals especially on dogs and cats increased.

The animals were being transported very cruelly in lorry violating all the norms. The transport department is not booking cases against the offenders. Not a single animal in a vehicle is supported with the veterinary certificate.

On August 5, Naga Panchami festival would be celebrated, on that specific day several snakes would be subjected to cruelty. As the rainy season started, the wildlife markets commenced in various districts of Telangana, where one can purchase wild birds and animals openly.

The stray animal menace is also on the rise, causing several problems. Recently, there was mass culling of dogs in various parts of the Telangana.

"We know only about the reported abuse cases, there are several other hundreds of cases where the dogs are poisoned, killed or slaughtered mercilessly. Every day, millions of chicks are commonly grounded up, drowned, burned, suffocated, crushed and even fed to other animals while still alive by the poultry industry," said Mahesh Agarwal, president, Telangana Goshala Federation

"On August 12, several thousands of cows and its progeny will be illegally slaughtered in the name of Bakrid in Hyderabad and adjoining districts violating all the norms of A P Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977 and Supreme Court Judgments," he said.

For the past several years T Goshala Federation has been working for the strict implementation of animal welfare laws and cow protection Act. But the government machinery has not been cooperating in this aspect. The animals are being transported very cruelly in lorry violating all the norms. The transport department has not been booking cases against the offenders. Not a single animal in a vehicle has veterinary certificate, the federation alleged. A maximum number of cows and useful bulls was slaughtered in GHMC limits violating AP Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977, and all the cows and its progeny were being transported from other districts to Hyderabad by road transport. The police department/ transport department was not booking cases against the persons who were transporting the animals for slaughter.
