Major exercise to take up road repairs afoot

Hyderabad: "The Comprehensive Road Maintenance Project works would be launched by December 10," said GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar, in a meeting held at Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) office on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner said, "Field work is going on to identify major roads where Comprehensive Road Maintenance works on 709 km of road length are to be taken up. Simultaneously, work is also going on parallel and link roads to ease the traffic load on the main roads by removing bottlenecks, if necessary, through land acquisition. There are also proposals to develop at least 10 km of roads in each zone." He further added, "As monsoon season is over, road and infrastructure work worth Rs 280 crore has been sanctioned."

Regarding the LRS Scheme, the Commissioner said, "GHMC is contacting around 28,000 applicants through phone, SMS, voice message to come and get LRS clearance of their pending files before December 31. In earlier drive around 26,000 LRS applications were cleared."

"GHMC is also identifying open places to construct public toilets and also to take up tree plantation under greenery development programme and also restoration of parks which were neglected. Repair works will be done to central medians and footpaths," he added.

Lokesh said about 35 bus bays would be constructed. There are proposals to construct skyways in each zone and also foot over bridge after getting necessary approvals.

Speaking about the potholes, Lokesh said, "Filling of potholes are in progress, specialised material is being used on stretches of 6 to 7 meters of road. While latest machines are being used for stretches ranging from 130 to 140 meters of road, within 2 to 3 months all damaged roads will be rectified."

To utilise 30 to 40 per cent of C&D waste, a C&D waste recycling plant was ready to open. In future, plans were afoot to utilise 100 per cent of C&D wastes after recycling. Similarly, waste to energy plant would be functional by end of January. At present, GHMC was lifting 6,400 metric tons of garbage every day, he said.

Speaking about 2BHK houses, he said, "Around 9,000 2BHK houses were ready to occupy and by June, 50,000 2BHK houses would be ready for occupation, he added.
