Hyderabad: Overflowing drains, bad roads remain big bane

Hyderabad: An industrial area with a total of 67,057 voters, Subash Nagar (130- division in Quthbullapur circle of GHMC) is one of the bustling places with mobility of commuters and pedestrians.

During 2016 elections, Devangari Shathisri representing the TRS won with 17,060 votes, trouncing a large number of contestants. This Unreserved (women) division witnessed independent candidate G Aadilakshmi coming up as runner-up with 8,165 votes, followed by TDP and BJP candidates with 6,974 and 3,490 votes respectively.

Major issues of Subash Nagar include the poor condition of roads, which makes travel a cumbersome experience for pedestrians and motorists alike, and also an outdated sewerage system. Whenever it rains, the sewerage overflows and creates a nuisance for the residents.

The residents of the area want the authorities to take up road repairs and recarpeting, as the latter turned apathetic after recent rains. Heaps of garbage can be found across the division.

Near Hanuman temple in Subash Nagar, manholes remain open, posing danger to commuters and pedestrians. According to locals, several accidents were already reported. In the recent monsoon, water stagnation was witnessed in different areas.

During the campaign of 2016 GHMC elections, Shanthisri had promised the people that she would fix the roads and sewerage system. "But the promises are yet to be fulfilled and voters remained are displeased with her performance during the tenure," said Krishna, a resident of Subash Nagar.

Among other issues engulfing the division is lack of bus shelter for the main bus stop of Subhash Nagar. Residents waiting for buses find it difficult to stand under the sun and wait for the bus. The only respite is the tree. "We had requested on several occasions for the provision of bus stop but there is no response from authorities. Every day I travel by bus from Subash Nagar to Secunderabad. Due to the lack of facility, we find it difficult to stand under a tree and wait for the bus. People who are new to the locality find it difficult even to identify the bus stop because of the absence of the mandatory signage," said Mahesh, another resident of Subash Nagar.

Krishna, a shopkeeper, said that the roads remained in bad condition and makes journey backbreaking. "When it rains the water stagnates all over the roads. The manholes which were damaged or opened were never repaired or closed, posing hazard. Some accidents also took place," he said.
