World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, raises awareness about the importance of freshwater and sustainable water management. The 2025 World Water Day will be a joint event with the World Day for Glaciers, focusing on the accelerating loss of glaciers and its consequences on water availability. Organized by the Permanent Missions of Tajikistan, Barbados, Peru, Senegal, Singapore, Switzerland, and the UAE, in collaboration with UNESCO, WMO, UNDESA, UN-Water, IAEA, IUCN, and UNU-INWEH, this high-level event will stress the importance of safeguarding glaciers for sustainable water resources.

The History of World Water Day

The concept of World Water Day was first introduced at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Recognizing the critical role of water in global sustainability, the United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 as World Water Day in 1993.
