World Radio Day 2020: Radio and Diversity

Every year February 13 is observed as World Radio Day to raise awareness about the importance of radio among people and the media. Encourages decision-makers to create and offer access to information via radio. This day is also meant to remember the influence of radio, which touches people lives and bring them together from every corner of the world.

The theme of World Radio Day 2020

This year's World Radio Day theme is 'Radio and Diversity'. It conveys the focus on diversity and linguistic tolerance. Radio is an essential medium in celebrating humanity, intercultural competence and democracy.

History of World Radio Day

Initially, the proclamation of World Radio Day was recommended by the Executive Board of UNESCO to the General Conference. Radio was established in 1946 on the suggestion of the Director-General of UNESCO.

Later the 36th session of UNESCO's General Conference announced February 13 as World Radio Day. The United Nations (UN) General Assembly endorsed UNESCO's declaration of World Radio Day on January 14 in 2013.

After this, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, a resolution was adopted for announcing February 13 as the World Radio Day.

Significance of World Radio Day

The World Radio Day primary purpose is to make the people and the media awareness about the importance of radio. It also inspires decision-makers to establish better access to information through this medium. Radio is a medium which improves networking and works towards building international cooperation among several broadcasters.

On February 13, both inside a newsroom and on the airwaves, UNESCO calls on radio stations to uphold the matters of diversity.
