Nutraceuticals: Worth The Hype?

The discussion has long gone on between the efficacy of food and dietary supplements and the result varies depending on the user and his needs. While there is an ongoing discussion of the logic behind the popping traditional prescription pills, in recent years the nutraceutical industry has bridged the gap.

What is a nutraceutical, then? Simply put, it's a commodity that serves a specific food's function, as far as its nutritional level goes. In India, they are governed under Clause 22 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, but the definition differs across countries. These are typically derived from initial, natural (plant or animal) food sources and formulated to provide nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals, calories, protein, antioxidants, etc.

Too good to be true? Well, while opting for nutraceuticals, there are one or two caveats to keep in mind. One is that they aren't monitored by any regulatory body like the FDA unlike other packaged foods or even drugs. So you need to be very careful about the nutraceutical source, and make sure you opt for a trusted, reliable brand.

The second is, clearly, that this is not a replacement for food– and that really boils down to common sense. Treat it as an add-on to an already nutritious diet, rather than as a food source itself. Consult a nutritionist or a dietician before determining what kinds of nutraceuticals to add to your meal plans.
