Parents demand deviation from GO 550 in NEET counseling
Hyderabad: The parents of the medical students express worries over their kids not getting seats, despite cracking NEET exam, even after the completion of the 2nd phase of counseling. Many parents maintain aspirations on the mop-up round, the results of which are to be declared on August 19.
The parents have been upset over the way the counseling is being handled. They claim that the reservation has been exceeding 50%, the limit set by the Supreme Court. The GO 550, introduced in 2001, has become a hurdle for the merit students of open category, they lament.
Due to GO 550, the seats that belong to merit students are going to reserved students, said Uma Kanth, a worried father whose son has achieved 502 marks in NEET 2019. He said that his son was supposed to get a seat in the first phase of counseling itself, but that he did not get a seat even after the second phase of counseling.
The Supreme Court has asked the state government to modify GO 550, but both in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the counseling has been taking place without any deviations. The GO allows Meritorious Reserved Category (MRC) to slide and opt for other colleges using seats in reserved categories, but the vacant seats are filled with the reserved students. The parents lament that the merit students are losing their seats in the process.
Parents demand that the clause of GO 550 that allows sliding of MRC should be modified by the state government as directed by the Supreme Court. There are allegations that Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) has compelled MRC students to avail reserved category in the 2nd phase of counseling. However, the officials of the university maintain that the no injustice has been done to the MRC candidates in the second phase of counseling. The Telangana High Court has ordered stayed the 2nd phase of counseling after five students approached the Court with allegations. However, no grievances were expressed over the first phase of counseling.
