The Spring Summer Runway saw a lot of crafty elements this year. While many of them like crochet and macrame were readily accepted by the fashion crowd, patchwork was one that most stylists and forecasters presumed would not go much further than the runway itself.

However, the trend became an instant hit with the stylish street crowd which in turn inspired the fast fashion brands to adapt it into various versatile garments.

Like all trends it wasn't until we saw our very own Sonam Kapoor sporting the trend in various forms from airy palazzos to a clean-cut trench-coat for as her airport look, did we start taking a note of patchwork clothing.

Sonam also sported an Indo-Western patchwork dress for a recent cover shoot and a pastel patchwork Skirt and Jacket for her recent movie promotions. Let us see the various outfits that can be included in our daily wardrobe and how to style them.

Accessories: If you are sceptical and just beginning to wear patchwork, start out with some accessories - Patchwork totes, slings and hobo bags are hugely popular. You can also try scarves with patchwork prints with plain clothing.

Patchwork footwear is also a rage at the moment - boots, sneakers, slip ons and even elegant bejewelled heels are available in many brands.

Denims: Most of us would be familiar with patchwork jeans and denim jackets which were very popular last year. These are ideal for you if you are just venturing into the patchwork territory - Try denim jackets, shirts, jeans and jumpsuit with patches from the same colour family.

To go one step further the same set of clothing but with contrast patches can be worn. Patchwork Denim jackets and jeans look awesome when paired with plain clothing like a crisp white blouse or a black crop top.

Pants and Jumpsuits: If you are not afraid to go a step further and love vibrant colours, we suggest trying patchwork pants outfit. Flared palazzos in flowy fabrics or loose cotton patchwork-print pants are ideal for a summer day out.

To unleash the inner hippy in you, try out flared pants with the print with a plain top tucked in neatly. Many youngsters are also seen wearing patchwork jumpsuits and doing so with grace. If you are brave enough to sport this look, make sure the accessories are minimal and footwear is simple.

Dresses & Skirts: While wearing these there are 2 ways you can go - Boho or Chic. To achieve the boho look, opt for flowy fabrics for skirts as well as dresses. The rule is simple - patches shouldn't be too big if fabric is more.

To achieve a chic and sophisticated look with Patchwork, opt for crisp silhouettes for both skirts and dresses. A stylish well fitted shirt dress with clean lines can make you look ladylike and elegant. Shift dresses, short A-line dresses, fitted skirts etc are some of the other options to keep it clean and simple.

Jackets: Patchwork jackets are gaining popularity with each passing day. Long trench coats with neat lines look chic and fashion forward and are ideal for travel.

A waist length stylish bomber jacket with matching short skirt gives a smart, youthful look. If you stay at warmer parts of the country pair up longline shrugs in flowy fabrics and patchwork prints with leggings and an oversized plain top.

Remember - Patchwork doesn't mean you have to wear clothing with patches of fabric quilted together.

Though this is where the style originated from traditionally, the current trend is more about prints that show patchwork patterns or well thought out patches with cleaner seams and finish.
