It Is World Theatre Day Today

Update: 2019-03-27 17:21 IST

Observed on March 27, World Theater Day symbolizes the power of the art form of theatre, but at a time when the generation is moving towards cinemas and digital platforms, it also serves as a reminder to honour the amazing world of theatre and its artists that give life to the characters and present a part of reality from a stage.

When we are celebrating World Theater Day, how can we forget William Shakespeare and his famous quote:

"All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances,

And one man in his time plays many parts."

William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist.

The International Theater Institute (ITI) began in 1961 to celebrate World Theater Day around the world for the value and importance of theatre. A theatre is, in fact, a reflection of society and, as the lights go out and the curtain rises, it is transported to a familiar, sometimes unknown world that amazing artists bring to life on stage. The work connects us and makes us part of it.

Here we bring some famous tweets on this special day:

Today shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the success of India's "Shakti Mission" in a speech to the nation, Rahul Gandhi congratulated the defence research agency and wished him "Happy World Theater Day".

"Well done DRDO I would also like to wish the PM a very happy World Theatre Day," tweeted Rahul Gandhi.
