Nirmala Sitharaman blames Millennials for an economic slowdown in auto sector
On Tuesday, at a press conference which was held in Chennai where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman made a statement that resonates with the collective mindset of the older gen. She said millennials are the reason for an economic slowdown in the automobile industry. As millennials won't buy their vehicles because they prefer calling for Uber/Ola rides in its place of investing in EMIs and giving the Indian auto industry the boost it needs. Later the finance minister spoke about the resultant loss in jobs.
"This sector (automobile) in particular, has been affected by several things such as the BS-VI movement, registration fee matter…and the mindset of millennials. Some studies show that millennials prefer not to commit to an EMI and instead prefer having Ola or Uber or taking the metro. So, a whole lot of factors are influencing it," - Nirmala Sitharaman
After the comment went public, millennials united in protest on Twitter. Very soon, #BoycottMillennials and #SayItLikeNirmalaTai started flooding on Twitter.
